There are many tomatoes called Brandywine, but this is THE Brandywine! Sudduth Strain Brandywine Tomato has got it all! Amazing flavor & huge meaty tomatoes that keep coming all season long. Plus, who doesn’t love a big beautiful potato leaf tomato? Here’s some history on this amazing tomato from Ark of Taste: There are many varieties of tomato that are called Brandywine, but these are different from the Sudduth Strain, causing a great deal of confusion amongst growers and consumers. The Sudduth Strain is considered by many to have best retained the legendary rich, sweet flavor associated with the Brandywine tomato variety. Its sweetness is well balanced with a notable acidity. The name Brandywine was first associated with the tomatoes in the late 1880s. By 1902, Brandywine tomatoes were being sold globally in several seed catalogues. However, they were soon replaced in the marketplace by thicker skin, hybrid varieties that were easier to ship. The variety was only recovered in the 1980s by Seed Savers Exchange, who received seeds from Dorris Sudduth Hill, whose family had been growing the tomatoes for over 80 years in Tennessee, in the southeastern United States. The Sudduth Strain now refers to the variety considered to be the “true” Brandywine tomato. The Sudduth Strain Brandywine Tomato is unique amongst the multitude of American heirloom tomato varieties because of its amazing flavor and direct lineage back to the pre-World War II era.

Mrs. Sudduth of Tennessee gave seeds, said to be in her family for more than 80 years, to tomato gardener, Ben Quisenberry of Ohio ( now deceased).
