The Japanese Zen Garden (枯山水, karesansui) was created in the 11th century as a place for Buddhist monks to have a place of refuge and meditation within nature while still within the confines of their monasteries. Usually walled in like a courtyard, these gardens were kept free from distractions and interruptions from the outside world, allowing the monks to contemplate the teachings of Buddha and the natural world in total peace. These gardens were carefully designed and maintained by the monks and each element, from the shape of the rocks to color of the sand, was deeply symbolic to them. Purchase our additional mini rakes separately (pictured) to make your sand art even more interesting and enjoyable to create. Additional moss to make your mini garden more lively or to display elsewhere is also available. Product Details These desktop traditional Zen Garden kits are packaged carefully with each element individually wrapped, along with printed label with instructions. Each kit includes lava rock from Japan's Mt. Fuji, all-natural freeze dried live moss grown at Mt. Fuji's base, white sand (as is traditional in rock gardens), a wooden tool for making designs (not pictured), and an unfinished wooden box with lid to hold your miniature dry garden. Small Garden Measures approximately 6 L x 4 W x 1 H Includes: 2 lava rocks, 1 type of moss, traditional white sand, wooden stick for creating designs in the sand (not pictured), and wooden box. Large Garden Measures approximately 8.7 L X 4 W X 1H Includes: 3 lava rocks, 2 different types of moss, traditional white sand, wooden stick for creating designs in the sand (not pictured), and wooden box.
